New eco-efficient procesess to strategic sectors in the Basque country
European environmental legislation and increased social awareness are driving different actors of society toward a more sustainable society. Industry plays a major role in this trend. Companies and, on the whole, Basque society welcome this commitment to sustainability, which can also count with the firm commitment of the Basque Government as articulated in the EcoEuskadi 2020 Strategy. The Basque economy is a competitive economy based on industrial production: this sector is responsible for 30% of the GDP of the Basque Country. Of that 30%, the metal sector generates some 13% of the total. Casting, forging and stamping as well as machining are the main money spinners in the metal sector. These sectors require a large quantity of resources and generate a substantial amount of waste and emissions. As such, it is in these companies" interest to be fully receptive to new environmental regulations, not in the least because it affects profitability.
The ECOFAB project seeks to position companies in the Basque metallurgical sector as eco-efficient businesses, for which tools, methods, equipment will be created that are adaptable to the environmental and production needs of the casting, forging and machining industries. The project is divided into 4 key areas for action: (1) Eco-efficient and process sustainability modelling, (2) Process parameter monitoring, (3) Ecodesign of production means and (4), Efficiency and energy saving.
