Rene 80 microstructural response to the laser cladding parameters

This article correlates the parameters used in the laser cladding of Rene 80 process with the microstructure obtained. Different types of microstructure are shown according to the working range used, from polycrystallinity to monocrystallinity (SX). The result is governed by the energy density. Various experiments have been carried out on machined base plates and thin walls in order to characterise the behaviour of the system, and it was found that the microstructure is independent of the width of the base used. The metallographic analysis shows a good microstructural joint between the substrate and the cladding material. The assessment of the micro-hardnesses shows constant values in monocrystalline samples, reaching values similar to those obtained with extra thermal treatments to homogenise them. A similar tendency is seen in the monitoring of the minor axis of the molten pool, with a slight deviation of a fixed value for the SX samples and a larger deviation in those with non-oriented grains. The suitability has been verified of the working window for obtaining a monocrystalline microstructure through the repair of the tip of a blade with variable width.
