IDEKO presents the latest advances in metrology at the 3DMC conference

Loughborough University hosted the ninth edition of the main European forum dedicated to the science of measurements.

Metrology, known as the science of measurements, is fundamental in industrial manufacturing to develop efficient production and maintenance processes, ensuring both the accuracy of component measurements and the improvement in the quality of the final product. Additionally, when integrated into the manufacturing process, it allows for the identification of errors on-site, improves the efficiency of production equipment, and optimizes resources.

The European 3DMC conference, which annually presents the latest technological advances in dimensional metrology applied to industry, is therefore a key event for the advanced manufacturing sector.

IDEKO, a technological center and member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA) with extensive know-how in this field, was present at the ninth edition, held from September 24 to 26 at Loughborough University (UK).

The Basque agent presented its latest innovations in key technologies to promote the sustainability and digitalization of European industry, such as photogrammetry and digital twins.

On one hand, IDEKO showcased the results obtained and the work developed in collaboration with the London-based UCL university within the framework of the DYnamite project, led by the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

Specifically, during the initiative, a low-cost, dynamic, and fast digital measurement solution based on photogrammetry was tested on various industrial equipment and in a real environment at the Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics in Montpellier (France). This solution is suitable for factories with large volumes, such as those in the aerospace or automotive sectors.

Simulation Technologies
On the other hand, IDEKO researcher Pablo Puerto participated alongside Ahmed Brahim, an expert from Tekniker, in a technical presentation where they showcased the work carried out jointly with the VTT center within the framework of the VIDIT project, led by the German National Metrology Institute (PTB).

Both experts shared with the attendees the digital metrological twin of a 3D robotic scanning system developed in the initiative, as well as the methodology applied by IDEKO for sensor characterization and virtual modeling.

VIDIT is funded by the European Union and aims to achieve methods and procedures to ensure trust and reliability in metrology from the application of virtual experiments and digital twins, simulation technologies that accurately replicate physical systems and their characteristics in a virtual environment.

About 3DMC
3DMC is an annual European conference focused on the application and development of 3D measurement technologies for industrial and research purposes. It is the meeting point for the international scientific-technological elite in the field of metrology.

Aimed at researchers and end-users of metrology systems, it offers three days each year to discuss the most innovative topics in this science and establish synergies among the main actors in the sector.

The organizing committee includes prominent scientific-technological research agents such as the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), University College London (UCL), and RWTH Aachen University.

The eighth edition was co-organized by the technological centers IDEKO and Tekniker.
